Singaporean Buzz in SIFF
(April 22, 2005)
Of the three Singapore shorts (A Wicked Tale, Malice and G-23)
shown together in SIFF's triple bill, Wicked is the longest
at 45 minutes, and stylistically the most carefully resolved.
Young director Tzang Merwyn Tong mixes together familiar devices
from fairytales, silent films and Singaporean-ish character
types to retell a familiar tale about big bad wolves and innocent
girls. Wicked's twist and resolution are a bit strained. However,
it is successful in excavating the violence and eroticism embedded
in Little Red Riding Hood, while throwing in for good measure,
some appropriately post-modern blood drenched visuals.
