Fairytale remake fails to Impress
Jeanmarie Tan,
SPH - The New Paper

March 2006

What's it about: In this postmodern, experimental take on Little Red Riding Hood, a Lolita-like girl(Evelyn) going to her grandmother's meets a stranger (Johan) who lures her into his game of seduction and manipulation.

What the critics say: Foreign critics called it a "stunning visceral and absolutely gorgeous film" which is "presented in chilling style", but they must be smoking the same dope as the characters. Although A Wicked Tale one-ups the fable's subtext of violence and sexual awakening, you'll shake your head at the laughable execution, dodgy production values, pretentious dialogue and one-note acting.

The seduction sequence is suppose to be erotic but smacks of smutty, sadistic soft porn. How do you explain scenes of Evelyn peeing in her panties, amputating the big bad wolf and then proceeding to "rape" him? After this horror show, you'll want your innocence back.
